Dr Banerji was heading the Bioorganic Division of the Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai, until 1998. Subsequently, he was Emeritus Professor of Natural Product Research at the Bhavan's S.P. Ayurved Research Center, Mumbai, until he joined as CSIR Emeritus Scientist at the Regional Research Laboratory, Thiruvananthapuram. In 2003 he was awarded the prestigious the “Raja Ramanna Fellowship (Department of Atomic Energy)”. Recently, at invitation of the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham he joined the Center for Biotechnology as a Distinguish Professor. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Indian Society for Bioorganic Chemistry, Vice President of the Indian Chemical Society (Western Branch) and Fellow of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences. He has visited many countries including the U.S. and several others in Europe and Asia in the capacity of a visiting faculty member or advisor and delivered many plenary lectures at National and International meets on Chemistry, Biology and Biotechnology. He is associated with many academic and industrial institutions in advisory capacity such as Defense Research and Development Organization, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Medicine Research, National Biosource Development Board, Arya Vaidya Sala (Centre for Medicinal Plant Research), Kottakkal. Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences etc. He has, to his credit, over 200 published research articles.
Dr Banerji has not only been a strong supporter of research in natural products but has also advocated that natural product research should be conducted with wider perspective keeping the biological implications in view and should not be confined to only medicinally relevant plants. His research work has established that nature is the repository of compounds with varied biological activities and exotic molecular architecture playing vital roles in many bioprocesses and having a great biotechnical potential.
